Side lights on cars are intended to stay on as side marker lamps with the headlamps on. The UK Vehicle Lighting Regs do not make good bedtime reading and there are many cop-out clauses, hence confusion at the MoT test station. On a motorbike the pilot lamp cannot be a side marker can it? But it is also a parking lamp which is a requirement in some areas, they're supposed to stay on with the headlamp, I've never seen one wired otherwise. The "front position lamp" is a legal requirement on a solo motor bicycle
