For the record, for those who do not know; never put aluminium or anodised material in a dishwasher, the detergent will ruin the shiny finish. This is often noticeable in cafes and restaurants where untrained kitchen staff put aluminium tea pots and sugar bowls etc, through the dishwasher.

Yeah, it's the water softener in the dish washer that does that, they use the salt in the bucket to re-charge the water softener, which is going to nicely corrode a reactive metal like aluminium. We've got an old aluminium saucepan, it goes through, it is very far from shiny. The detergents used in a dishwasher are pretty aggressive and will remove stubborn stains from old bike and car bits
