I may just have found a Royal Enfield Ensign, 150 cc two stroke from "1952".. which it probably isn't as the only RE Ensign info I can find states they were made from 1956 - 1962.


It looks to be in really good condition and it's going at a reasonable price. Running too... Sorry, no pictures yet..

Anybody out there with any experience of these machines? I'd be grateful to hear from you.

Looking at the catalogue, that's the bike.. and it appears to be pretty original compared to the picture. The one I looked at is fitted with pillion and rear footrests, which is advertised as 'extras'. OK, 1952 it is then.

I was hoping to find someone who owned, or indeed owns, one. It looks like a simple machine to maintain and I have found places on the 'interweb' offering spares, one tip suggests our hosts might have spares. I might just ring and hear what they have to say.

You can find the appropriate Parts Book in the sidebar on the left, click on an item and it will tell you price and availability. I haven't ridden one of these but I do know that the points (Made by Miller and not very good when new,) are prone to wear out and are impossible to find. However there is a fix involving fitting modern ones. (See Velocette LE website, these bikes are cursed with the same unit.) Be aware that these are very low powered and unless you are a member of a club catering for these things (say Cyclemotor Club) or have access to very quiet roads, you're unlikely to do many miles. This I took from someone who owned one for quite a few years and really did try to use it. Good luck,

Hi Exile. I have a Ensign MK2 1957, the main problem is the contacts and capacitor are not available, I have been trying to find an alternative but no luck as yet.

Hello Exile, i had a RE Ensign in 1957, my first bike, i was sixteen and a GPO Telegram Boy so i could not afford much. The bike was old when i bought it for £23 and the registration number was PAR 136 so i dont know where your information came from but it's definitely wrong. I did'nt know much about bikes at that age so cant help you there but hope this helps.

If you contact me with engine and frame number I have information from the factory records which can pinpoint the date of your Ensign. I doubt if it is 1952 as the 125cc RE2 was still in production then and the Ensign I only appeared in 1953. There is a lot of commonality between the 150cc engines of the Ensigns I. II and II and Prince and even the 125cc RE2, but there are some important differences. Any of these engines will fir any of th frames, so it is not unusual to find that the engine is not the one originally fitted.
