I'm not a betting man, but I'd lay odds-on you won't get Type Approval for an Indian market Himalayan, never mind getting as far as removing it from the HMRC compound at port of entry so insurance is going to be one of least of your worries.

vill98, I have just been talking to a man who has just personally imported from Japan a 25 year old Nissan car that was never imported into the UK or Europe. He had no problems whatsoever.
My wife and I have also in the past had no problems whatsoever with grey import motorcycles.

I thought you might have problems with emissions compliance but looking at this it appears not:-

Papa - 25 year old Nissan is very different to brand new RE. I used to be in the import/export business but many years ago so my information nowadays has to come from other authorities. This is a direct quote from an RE Main Dealer website Homepage "Buying a Royal Enfield in India and riding it home to the UK. Don't be tempted!!

At the end of the recent and excellent Channel 4 documentary ‘Our Guy in India’, our hero Guy Martin, in praising the RE Bullet 500, said he was quite taken with the idea of riding the bike ‘’home to Grimsby’’.
Admirable though this thought is, it has not been feasible to do this for some time because, although it can be done, ie buying the RE cheaply and riding it to the UK, the DVLA will NOT register an India sourced machine for use on the road in the UK........................
The reason for this is that all machines legitimately imported have to be CE Compliant or ‘Homologated’’ for use in Europe. Regrettably the Indian market product is not compliant and although you could spend time and money going through the SVA process (single vehicle authorisation) by the time you get to DVLA they will still want a Manufacturer Certificate of Homologation.
The Chennai Factory will NOT issue this to you no matter how you ask them!
Therefore the value of your machine after import duty, VAT, SVA testing etc. will be as SCRAP!!
Don’t say you haven’t been warned!!"
It may or may not be a correct representation of the facts BUT . . . . I know I wouldn't waste my money trying to disprove it!! Caveat Emptor may be appropriate here.

Got to admit that was my understanding of the regulations,,,,,,, but I hadn't posted it on the thread because I do admire someone who will try to circumnavigate authority. The bike is already on the way I believe so why not give it a try. I bought my EFI in England because it was much cheaper than here in France, the French Enfield forum members told me it was quite impossible to register a UK Enfield in France. Well it's sitting in my garage now wearing a French number plate. I guess worst case scenario is that it eventually gets shipped back to the relatives in India?,,,,,,,,,,,,,

As far as I can see a Himalaya is compliant with CURRENT emissions being applied in the UK, BUT it would not be if imported in 2017.
(As an aside just for a laugh some years ago when emission standards first came into force in the UK, I had a Reliant Robin that was exempt from the regulations. However the garage I used did an emissions test on it and it was more than compliant.)

According to everyone I have spoken to yesterday and today at the dvla and other departments that will be involved in the registering of the bike I should only have a few things to do to make it uk registration ready it arrives at my house on Monday so will soon know. iam told by my relative who purchased it for me (road registered in India ) in rides nicely and remindes him of a yamaha single trials bike he had in the 80s

Papa, just had a look at that Euro transport guff they have in line for us in the future and thought to myself..

Would Brexit make any difference to this rubbish, i suppose not as we would still have to conform..

Maybe start another thread so as not to mess up Vill's... Few opinions out there i've no doubt..
