Has anyone used gearbox grease? what's it like and is it any good? How do you use it
I have a gearbox leak right at the back where it comes out at the final drive sprocket and cutch. I just want a temporary job done till I can get to do it Thanks al Truro

I would suggest NOT using it as you could end up with far bigger problems that you currently have.

The correct gearbox grease (Renolit) has been used in some Enfield gearboxes (UK and Indian) from the year dot. It is used were the bearings are not sealed and regular gear oil would not be retained in the gearbox. It is perfectly safe to use in the appropriate gearboxes and is best applied using some sort of syringe method of injecting it into the gearbox; though it rarely needs replacing unless the gearbox has been dismantled. If the ‘oil’ level is low in the gearbox the idea is to ‘top-up’ with engine oil.

I don't think ending up with a greasy clutch is a good idea.

First thing you need to ask is why has it just started leaking, I am with Papasmurf here you could be masking a fault which will cause more damage.

is it a 4speed or 5speed gearbox?

Its a 4 speed box, I has a worn bush and is leaking oil where the shaft comes out for the final drive sprocket. There is no problems with oil and the clutch

Hi Presto, yes its always being run on the correct grade of oil.
I will be replacing all of the bushes and bearings and all of the parts will have a full clean. But Im having to wait a bit as I can't afford to have the bike off the road hence the quick tempory fix

Hi Al - that's a bit of a puzzle, because if its a standard Indian 4 speed gearbox it would normally be packed with grease. Oil would be used only if sealed, non-standard, bearings had been fitted. So 'the correct oil' in that 'box - if it is an Indian 4 speeder - would be grease!
