Hi Scalyback, Like Revband says, Meteor Minors have coil ignition with auto advance & retard built into the distributor. Yours will probably have the LU/40610A 18D2 Distributor, my 1958 Small Frame model has the LU/40550A Distributor. The control on the right handlebar is the Air Lever (not choke!)
I have a nice original mint 1960 parts book surplus to requirements if it is of any use to you. REgards Dick.

Nice machine and FAST! Not entirely sure I believe the 95mph claim though. Still it's easy to tell if it's an advance/retard lever as it will in the case of a battery and coil machine move the distributor back and forth a small amount. An advance/retard lever is an excellent thing to have even if the distributor has bob weights. Pulling with a load say two up up a long hill the bob weights will keep you are full advance whereas with a lever you can ease it back a notch as a more modern setup with a vacuum advance would. Also you get the option of setting the idle at a preposterously slow tick over to impress friends and passers by. Quite jealous I must admit.

Thanks for the offer Caboose, I may well take you up on that if (I still got to get used to this...) 'Kevin' doesn't come with one.

oh, er, RIGHT handlebar lever?

Oh no, I think I have been looking at one of those large light dip switches! So much for studying the photos, LOL!

I guess I should wait until tomorrow lunchtime, when Kevin arrives.

I have just been looking at your other post re name and it is coil ignition with auto advance, the key switch can be seen in the toolbox lid as can the bulge in the timing cover for the auto advance. Looks a nice bike.

Thanks all, it does look good.

Ever since all those disappointments you get as a child, I have the policy of not building my expectations on something before it happens, But this time I have disregarded that. I'm bloody excited about Kevin's arrival tomorrow.

I do have this slight inadequacy feeling though, a bit like "I'm not worthy to wash the mud of its tyres." But I am sure this will fade fast.

I spent ages learning about bullets (Oil halfway up dipstick, etc.) Is an RE twin much different, or the same sort of principle?

Is there a Meteor Minor club/group/website?

I did find a site where a guy has documented overhauling a 1959 Meteor Minor, It is golden stuff, especially the humorous way he writes. Well worth the time to read, even if you have no idea what a meteor looks like. He seems to post infrequently, but it had been a while since the last update.

Strangely for me, it's not green and not a military bike. I guess this will count as my civvy steed!
