Is it possible to top up the grease in the gearbox through the filler cap on top? Does it help to heat it up a bit? '89 bullet, Veedol - substitute grease.

I used to use an old 1litre oil bottle (the type with the built in tube) to squeeze it into the gearbox filler plug. If you use this method you must remove the level plug or you'll get a pressure build up in the gearbox as the tube is a snug fit in the filler hole and most of the grease you've just forced in will eventually erupt back out the hole. Warming definitely helps, place the grease in a suitable container and sit that in a pan of very hot water, when soft/runny pour or spoon the grease into the oil bottle. It can be dispensed from there easily enough either warm or cold.

You can top it up with 20/50

Thanks, ric. Pete, yes i know about the 20/50 but I have had the cover off and lost a lot of the original grease, and it's hard to get it to stay in until you get the cover back on. Horrible stuff!

If you do need to put grease into a gearbox a useful method if to use a sealant 'gun' - as used for applying sealant around the bath. Use it like a 'grease-gun'.

Good idea Presto but you would need an empty tube for your sealant gun. Is such a thing available?

Back in the day...Veedol 00 grease could be purchased in a cartridge tube that you'd insert into a [bathroom]sealant gun.
I tried to get some a few years back but the bloke on the end of the phone told me I was the 10th person he'd told that morning there was absolutely no demand for it ;).

There appears to be a plethora of grease cartridges available on the internet, it appears to be just a case of matching the specification.
