Girish, the distributor needs to come off. This involves removing the timing cover and the distributor pinion. There is a special tool for this. It is then held with three screws. You then need to dismantle the distributor to replace the seals. When you've got everything back together the ignition will have to be re-set. As Gwilly says, it looks like a pain of a job and one I've never had to do.

Pete, Thanks. Do you know what is the name of this special tool you were talking about? I have one more question regarding timing cover:
Can I just mark timing plate with back plate or something before removing it and after resealing it just make sure the plate is aligned to the marks? Does timing changes from where it was before removing distributor?

A puller with two legs can be moved behind the gear. There is a cut in the case to do this, but once it is off the shaft it will not go back in same place. it is free taper only no keypoint.
It is best idea to set ignition with points just opening before destructing engine then it can be resembled in same way later

It's a distributor pinion extractor(accessories/tools/engine tools) I guess you could get everything roughly back where it was if you marked carefully but Skryn says, there's no key on that pinion so you will need to re-time the ignition.

Don't forget also that there are bob weights in the distributor that need to be held open when you sent the static timing.

Well Simon, you CAN time it retarded but you're right that it makes more sense to time it advanced. Hitchcocks make a little lock washer to hold the unit advanced. East to make up if you have a lathe.

I couldn't find DISTRIBUTOR PINION EXTRACTOR tool. Is there any other tool that I can buy from local auto store will do the trick?
