Or simply that the carb is not set up correctly. Is the carb clean? Has it been left standing with fuel in it? Is the air filter ok? Are the connecting hoses sound?

Taking it in good faith that Taz has set the points and timing to close enough, then first thing would be to buy some good quality higher octane fuel.

Shell would be good, anything but bloody Tesco cheapo. Slower burn might just reduce kick backs and aid hot starts..

Next if you can check the plug colour after 10 minutes ticking over would give an indication of where we are. With ign OFF get your screw driver and turn in the air screw (clockwise) until it stops and importantly count the amount of half or full turns you made to reach it.. The Mikcarb needs to be set at approx 1.5 turns out, give or take a quarter turn..
Turn clockwise in to richer and anticlock out to lean..
With the motor running at slightly raised tickover (Throttle stop screw) adjust the air screw either way to get the fastest smoothest engine note..

Now reduce the tick over to slow steady and trim the air screw ever so slightly, gnats whisker clockwise richer with steady tick over..

As a rule of thumb with this carb if its more than 2 turns out for steady tick over then your running too rich a pilot jet. Conversely less than 1 full turn means jet too weak or blocked..

There are other variables like slide needle height or float level but tackle each thing one at a time and note results..

Before posting i've just read that you have the carb apart. set float height to 24mm and make a note of what numbers are written on the three jets and needle..

Have you taken a look at the very thorough Tech Note on this site? 'Tuning and Using the Mikcarb'. It gives a very sound way to set the tick-over - as well as telling all you need to know about this little carb. ;-)

I checked it all over, the air screw was 1.25 turns out, and the plug looked perfect after my 10 mile ride home from work.

I took it to a local bike meet, and she fired first kick when I left.. she was still warm.. looks like I just need to get more confident with my kicking!

A good cold start but bad warm is generally because the idle mixture is too rich. Try kicking it warm with the throttle wide open this will give more air. If it's an old iron motored bullet give it a few kicks with the throttle open and the decompressor pulled to clear the cylinder Flight of the Phoenix style. If these work then dial back the idle mixture a tad. I always use quarter of half turns so I know where I started from. Another sign that the idle circuit is too rich is a puff of black smoke when you blip the motor
