Leon on an Electra as I and many other have found out if you don't want an overfilling disaster. It is run the engine for a few minutes, immediately drain the oil, rear drain plug only, because touching the front two drain plugs can lead to all sorts of problems (that is Hitchcocks advice by the way.)Change the oil filter, because not doing that at every oil change can lead to problems.
(Leave things to drain for a while before putting a new filter in and putting back the drain plug, with a new washer.)

Only fill the tank with around 1.3 litres of oil or until 4 inches (100mm) is in the tank.(I have made my own dipstick to check that, it touches the bottom of the tank.

The run the engine for a couple of minutes, stop the engine, wait two minutes, and check the level. Half way between the top and bottom level on the usual dipstick is sufficient.

I always drain the oil when it's hot so that as much muck as possible is in suspension. A few minutes running really won't do much more than warm the oil slightly.
The potential problems with the sump drain plugs can be prevented by fitting Dowty washers . It's a good idea to check those gauze filters now and again, just be CAREFUL not to cross thread them.
Quite a bit of oil remains in the timing chest and this should be drained or you have only done a partial oil change.
Once you've filled the oil tank and run the engine for a bit, the level will go down as the oil filter chamber and the timing chest fill up. This can be quite enough to drop the level off the dipstick.
