Your headlamp only comes on with the engine running????

GUYS! when were the ac/dc bullets made???

Tomo, start your bike, see if the pilots work, if they do, stop the engine with kill switch if installed or with key, turn key back on, have pilots and headlamp gone off?

If so, then you have an ac/dc bullet and the main lights will only work with the engine running as they run straight off the generator.

I don't know how ac/dc bullets work,,, anyone?

Thanks Norm. I just tried that, hooked one test light wire up to a good earth on the engine, then the other I touched onto the terminals of the wires coming into the connector from the main harness. Turned on the ignition and lights, the grey lit up the light, the black and white is indeed indicators, but on the green and blacks got nothing. Tried pressing the brake levers each time too but no joy. Think next I`ll have to try to get the tail unit off the mudguard to see whats going on in there, must be another connector I think so wonder if the problems might be there. If I can get the nut undone that holds it on after 15 years of rusting under that mudguard, but I`ll get it, Just don`t understand electrics at all !.

Hi Scalyback, yes the headlight does indeed only come on when the engine is running. Bought the bike new in 2000 and its always been that way. The only time I`ve touched the electrics before was to fit a powerbox in place of the reg/rectifier. When the engine is not running, the pilot lights come on when the light switch is in park position. If I move it to lights ie headlight then they go off. I will start him up tomorrow to see if the pilots come on with the headlight though, bit too late now and don`t think the neighbours would appreciate it !.

Well, after a little bit of internet surfing, seems I have an AC/DC Bullet !. Seems appropriate as thats one of my favourite bands !!. I had a look in the tech section of our hosts site, found an article about charging systems and seems the AC/DC bikes are post 1999, says ignition switch moved from toolbox to casquette, which is the case on mine. Then on another site, found a colour wiring diagram for an AC/DC Bullet and guess what, the wiring colours all tally with what I found on my bike. So I have learnt something I did`nt know about Henry. Still have to sort this problem out but maybe getting closer now ?.

well, now you have the right diagram for Henry, it should just be a case of following the diagram and testing at connectors and things, remembering of course that the main lights only work with engine running!

I am not familiar with ac/dc, where did you find the diagram?

Scalyback, I found it believe it or not on a Ratbike site !. I would put it up on here but my computer skills are on a par with my electrical know how !. The wiring colours seem to match what I have got, but the diagram is still very confusing to a nugget like me. But from what I can see, the wires into and out of the connector I mentioned before (the wires out run up under the mudguard to the tail light unit) are, dark green/black to RH indicator, Black/white to LH indicator, black earth from indicators, green to brake light and grey taken to a connector then changes to that brown wire to the tail light. Both rear indicators work ok. But tail light and brake light dead. There is power where the grey enters the first connector and also when I connect the test light to the bulb holder terminal off the brown wire. The bulb holder is supposed to be earthed to the mudguard, so I wondered if that might be the source of the problem. So I conncted a piece of wire to a good earth point and the other end to the bulb holder. The brake light filament came on, but I was not operating the lever or pedal. Another thing, at the footbrake light switch, I would think that one terminal is a power feed and the other an earth ?, but with my test light connected to the bike frame, it lights up when the other end is connected to each of the switch terminals. This is driving me nuts !.

even with the pins on the tail bulb being offset, people do manage to get them in the wrong way round, just give yours a check.

Tomo, I Would think the two terminals at the brake light switch are power in and power out.ie contact is made when the brake pedal is pushed, and voltage continues on to brake light unit.

Tomo, check harness under mudguard where it goes into rear light unit. When I got my Bullet, one of the indicators stopped working. After checking bulbs and earths etc, I found that the harness was looping down, not clipped to mudguard at back, and the tyre had rubbed through it and worn through a wire.
