Assuming your bike is per 95 diagram...

The tail light is connected to the two tiger's eye pilot lamps, the speedo and ammeter illumination and the pilot lamp in the headlamp shell (all depending on if these are fitted to yours or not.

one of the main lighting switch terminals has a pillar on it which connects it to the middle of the switch as per photo below. This is terminal No.6 and should have three wires connected, post probably to a spade terminal at the top. With the lighting switch on H, make sure you have power to this terminal, which comes from terminal No. 2 (brown wire).

The three wires are:-

Orange or brown in your case, to the tail lamp.

green to the tiger's eyes and headlamp pilot

orange to the ammeter and speedo illumination.

IF earthing the tail light works, but earthing the pilot lamps does not, then look at the connectors in the headlamp shell for bad connections:-

one 4-way with two green wires and two others possibly black, going to the pilot lamps

one 4-way with three orange wires. one from switch, the other two going to the speedo and ammeter to power illumination.

the headlamp

run out of the switch via the blue wire, to the dipper switch or 'cluster' switch, it then runs as two wires to the headlamp shell:-

(Hopefully) red which is the low or dipped beam supply

(hopefully) white which is the main beam. there will be a connector in the headlamp shell from the main beam wire, with a third wire that goes to the blue main beam tell tale in the speedo.

If that don't sort it out, go down the end of the road, turn right four times, that brings you back here, then ask again!

Hi Tomo, can't help with your current (no pun intended) problem, but are you anywhere near Barnard Castle?

Thanks chaps. Scalyback, really appreciate you taking time to jot all that down, I will check all those areas out. I have never really understood electrics, so need all the help I can get. Wilf, I am near Darlington, so pretty close to Barnard Castle.

HiTomo, I'm in Winston,Darlington side of Barnard Castle.Maybe hunt out a few more Bullet riders and meet up when the weather improves?

Hi Wilf, not very far apart at all !. Would be good to meet up for a run out sometime, once I have sorted Henry the Bullet`s problems out, going to have another look at those electrics this afternoon. One thing about being self employed, I have a good boss so I should get the time off ok !. I don`t know any other RE owners around here myself, but must be a few about.

Great stuff, you can email me(regcox48)@gmail.com) when Henry is sorted, and the weather improves a bit.

wilf...

Go round to Tomo's place and help him fix his bike!

Thanks wilf, will do. Well, this afternoon I managed to get the front pilot lights to work. Seems that with each one, the bulb holder which I guess serves as the earth, was not making contact with the sides of the holes in the casquette they push into. I opened up the tabs a bit and hey presto, it worked. The headlight pilot is ok too. Unfortunately the tail light is still dead though. The pilots only come on when the switch is in the park position though, not when the headlight switch is on, but I can`t recall if thats how it was before. I know the headlight has never come on unless the engine is running, assume that is normal as its been that way since I bought the bike new in 2000.

But back to the tail light. Scalyback, my bike wiring colours don`t seem to tie in with the diagram. Maybe the factory were short on the correct colours when it was made !!. I looked at the wires which run to the ameter first. The instrument lights work ok by the way. The wires are red/yellow, red, grey and black. Also noticed the horn wiring is different too, red/white and black. From the lighting switch the wiring cluster has two yellow, red/white, black, green, purple, white, black/white, black, grey and blue. Wires connecting to the headlight are orange, black, green and blue, with the pilot light grey/black. Wire to the two other pilots are grey/black too. The other puzzler is the connector just before the wiring loom goes under the rear mudguard to the back light and indicators. The wires into and out of that are Grey, green/red, black/white and two blacks. No sign of that brown wire connecting to the rear light bulb holder, but guess there must be another connector in the housing I can`t get at. The grey wire seems to get power through as the test light works when connected to earth and connected to the grey. Also as i mentioned before, when touched to the brakelight terminal in the rear bulb holder. But the brakelight itself won`t come on when the bulb is put back and the lever or footpedals depressed. It does with a temporary wire taken from bulb holder to earth, but is on without operating the lever or footpedal.

I am getting really confused with all this, boy do I hate electrical problems !.

Into the connector put your test lightand find out what the wires do, with the ignition on and lights on Grey is probably tail light, the 2 striped wires probably blinkers and then put your foot on the brake pedal and find which wire lights up, then you have to trace these wires back to the tail light
