A quick retraction of something I stated in my first post. I appears I was sent a response to my oil pump question by our hosts on the 9th of January but for some reason I didn't receive it. Very comprehensive answer it was too. S

If you are expecting a chaincase explosion, maybe a rubber bung would be a better idea than a screw-in plug. Belt-drive conversion, anyone? Perhaps our hosts could drop the price a bit? ATF froth isn't the only unexpected thing to go bang with a stray spark, quite a few flour mills have gone up with catastrophic results when milling dust (or stray flour?) has been ignited by some random ignition source. Exploding ATF?

Automatic car transmissions have been around for decades, never heard of one explodong. Know of the internals disintegrating through lack of lubrication ie ATF
However just for curiosity I will put the question to an auto transmission technician acquaintance

Bryan, auto trans usually don't have an alternator in them either that could create a spark

I bet this will have people scurrying around and pulling the ATF out of their primaries now lol

There are electrically operated solenoids inside an automatic gearbox to allow the ATF to operate the clutches.
If one fails, there can be delay in gear changes or non at all.

Leon, autos have a dipstick that could pop up if a slight explosion occured, Enfield primary case is sealed

Hey Simon, what makes you so confident, that the crack hans been caused by an explosion? Maybe only the nut was too tight?

Well the mighty explosion was a hint. The plug in my cover is a home made one so the hole might be something I missed. I don't think it would have stopped the explosion however. I fully intended to put ATF back in the primary case but I will stop flashing the alternator wires around. There is clearly an insulation break down in my stator but under usual conditions I am confident it will be fine.
