I have this from our hosts , the new smiths version.
I have followed the wiring instructions however all works fine until... I switch on my main light s then it does not work, I know my bike runs direct frim the alternator for main lights if this helps but blowed if I can figure out the reason why all works well until I switch on my main lights.
any assistance welcomed

Electronic stuff is fussy about voltage. I'd be tempted to wire it back to the battery (all supposing the battery is OK.

I fitted the same type of rev-counter to my 612 cc HMC GT cafe racer several years ago, and although it was initially OK, during the last 2 years or so it frequently becomes very erratic for a few seconds whilst riding, then returns to normal. This is despite very careful re-wiring, including earths, etc.

My kick-start-only bike has battery-fed lighting and a good, uprated battery, not direct lighting. I too suspect this problem is caused by varying voltage in the system as the engine speed and the alternator charging rate & current demand alter. Having said that, it works OK most of the time!

to 612cc,
had a similar problem trying to fit a sat/nav to my HATZ/diesel enfield. As soon as I started the engine it would shut down tried it in a friends car and it worked perfectly.So it seemed to be a voltage problem checked my bike and it was giving 13-14 v too much for the sat/nav to cope with. So I contacted Neil at www.reuk.co.uk and he advised fitting a voltage regulator and taking the supply from that did that and no further problems output voltage was spot on 12 v and the sat/nav has worked quite happily since.
On his web page click (at the top) REUK shop and about three pictures down is what helped me.

OK :)
I found out that the early versions of this smiths rev counter are missing an additional grounding wire , there is a spare slot in the plug ground this and the rev counter will work with the lights on and you will get an illuminated dial .. hope this helps someone out there .. took me some time to work out :)
