Hi all,am at my whits end,a 1960 triumph T21 problem.
Starts ok and when warm will rev. its socks off but, when riding it ( or trying to ) ok in first gear but when clicked into second it wont pull, you can open the throttle to the stop but nothing happens.
Have renewed coil-condenser-ht leads.Have retimed it , have cleaned carb out, have even smoked it to see if head gasket or anything else leaking still no joy.
Would appreciate any help anyone can give as I have run out of ideas
I ride an enfield as well, when i can get the triumph going its going at least the enfield gets me around .

Hi, Had exactly the same problem with my T21 when I got it. Turned out the cam gears can be fitted in 3 different positions and the bike still runs but with no guts. Timed it right and it was then the sweetest bike I have ever had.

You don't mention changing the plug - could be that simple.

Any history on the bike? IE did you buy it like this or has it just started doing it?. if the second did you alter/replace anything just prior to the fault?.

You make no mention of the dissy cap - its not worn or dirty/damp or something that simple is it? I had a very annoying intermitent misfire on my T90 which I eventually traced to a batch of snide plugs, I'd been replacing one bad one with another one. Also there was a problem known as Tiger 90 itis, which was caused by a double spark at the points. This was cured by a reprofiled points cam, don't know it it might affect your bike if she's had work done on the motor, someone could have fitted the wrong one. Persevere matey because it's a cracking little engine once it's running well.

"Dry stored" is the clue. Carburettors suffer terribly when the bike is stored, especially if there is any petrol left in them. Crud forms in the various passages - most likely hidden from view - and causes all sorts of problems, but loss of power under load is the number one symptom (fuel starvation, basically).

You can sometimes recover the situation by dismantling the carb and giving it a really long session in a powerful ultrasonic cleaner. Up to two hours, sometimes.

However, on the two occasions I've had exactly this problem, ultrasonic cleaning never got it right and I ended up having to buy new carburettors.
