... not really expecting any good news. After coming off the bike a few weeks ago, it just doesn't feel quite right. I did loads of work getting it roadworthy again after the fall, but I predict the testet wont agree with 'roadworthy' in quite a few areas. We'll see! Update to follow.

Treat the MOT as having someone else going over your bike and either saying all OK or giving the reasons why it is not.
Some long time ago, before it had the third wheel tacked on, we were dumped by the Flash, minor damage that was put right at no cost. For quite a while it did not feel right. Eventually I did a partial strip and checked the frame against BSA Service Sheet data, lo and behold - the frame was straight & undamaged, wheel alignment spot on.
Any perceived "not rightness" must have been in my mind. Nervousness after the tumble maybe?

Failed on one thing only - a leaky petrol cap. I assume a gasket would fix it? Otherwise I am both astounded and reassured in my fettling abilities.

I am pleased for you Michael and yes a cork seal will do it, look at the "parts books online" section on the left

When you say failed do you mean they failed it completely. Or did they just give you an advisory notice to get it fixed. Seems a bit mean to fail it on a petrol cap seal. Still at least you know the rest is ok and in good fettle.

Michael you should have used the tried and true response "they all do that sir" because those locking flip caps do. I think I tied a bootlace around above the existing rubber in the cap and it sealed it up reasonably well and also stopped it rattling

It failed on the cap, not advisory. It's fair enough though, it does leak a fair bit!!!! The rubber gaskety thing is pretty much non-existant, if even there at all! I collect the bike tomorrow, so will hunt around the garage for a rubber ring or something similar to see if I can sort it out, and if not I will order a new seal from Mr H. I have the usual 10 days (and counting) to present it again.




As Beeza said, this time round the MOT is very much a safety check over for me. I normally approach the MOT with a lot of preventative maintenance, but this time round I wasn't so sure after the spill. So the fact that someone has officially said that too much petrol leaks out of the tank - well that is fine by me. Especially as it will cost next to nothing to rectify unless there is a massive crack!




Now... remind me... why did I just tempt fate with that mention of crack!

Paul, the trouble with ‘advisory’ notices is they are just that - ADVISORY. There is no compulsion on the owner to rectify the fault and something like a fuel tank cap leak is never going to get better on its own is it? Back in the day a pal of mine was wishing his bike had been failed for a leaking fuel tank when wet leaves put him in a ditch under his machine (B31 if I remember correctly) fuel soaking his DR coat and the first bloke running across the road to lift the bike off him was smoking a fag, disaster waiting to happen! Not trying to have a pop here, just pointing out that the MoT regulations are there for everyone’s protection (mostly!?). Michael, well done buddy. Adam
