Sounds stupid but I suppose you are installing the plates in the correct order?

To be franc Frank :) I checked when I bought them as to how to assemble. The guy on the counter had no idea either, so popped off to ask! I am not going to pursue with this clutch further. I have wasted time and money throwing parts at it that do not do what is claimed, apparently.

I still say there is thousands of these clutches out there that work

Carberrys are fitted with the 5 plate 5 speed clutch and they don't suffer from clutch slip and most of those are 1100cc

No Norm, I am not going to suggest replacing the steel ball bearing with a ceramic ball bearing between the clutch rods.

You may have hit on something there Leon. Not the ball but that there are two pushrods separated by the ball. I'm wondering what is snagging one or other of the rods thereby holding off the pressure plate. Before chucking good money after bad why not try fitting a straight full length rod.

I think it is still worth checking the plates have been fitted in the correct order and in the case of the dished plates the right way round. The sequence is shown in the Bullet Clutch Problems section of the Technical Notes on this site. It seems there has been some doubt when the 5 plate conversion was fitted. Be rather annoying to say the least to spend big money on a new clutch only to find the problem when stripping down the old one!

Clutch basket, 1st steel plate (dished). Dish facing outwards, then alternating friction and steel. Last steel (dished). Dish facing inwards, finally friction and pressure plate. Free-play between pressure plate and push-rod. I will strip it once again this weekend. I still feel the riveted plates are playing some part in this clutch slip not gripping the clutch centre enough.
