The gap at the back of gearbox is actually not bad in the flesh - the plates disguise it quite well and also the engine is set back about an inch from where a norton would be - splitting the difference a bit if that makes sense. The 680 engine pulls like a train with a 22t gearbox sprocket - it would pull more if you could make it fit, but I had to shave and re-weld the cases quite a bit to get the 22t to fit. Also handles great as you would expect. Bike is actually my wife's - it has electric start and left foot shift five speed so she is happy riding it. Keeps up with my 560cc SOHC Manx engined featherbed no problem! Everyone should have one! Wish I could upload pics direct so you could see completed bike.

Featherbed frames - and I would suggest you want a slimline - turn up in Old bike mart and the classic mag small ads, plus occasionally on errbay but I would avoid Norvil as they charge like the light brigade and I wont comment on the customer service which reminds me of British Rail in the 70s

If you buy a used featherbed frame, you need to factor-in the cost of having it checked on a jig and possibly repaired. These things are decades old and some examples will have had a hard life.
