Could auto advance be not working as it should? Broken/weak springs; sticking, causing retarded ignition?

Why would you slacken the mounting bolts then run it on idle? This will only have the engine jumping around more, possibly wearing the holes in the frame. Slackening them all to remove any stresses seems a good idea, but then I would tighten them up again before running the engine.

Taken the primary case off and watched whats going on. The only thing that doesnt look right is that the clutch sprocket drum does seem slightly off centre and wobbles out of true by probably less than a millimetre. looking at it square on, it doesn't seem to sit perfectly centrally on the clutch sprocket. I didn't dismantle this so am wondering if this could be the problem or not?

Just another thought - my bike kicked-back violently once. It did start again after a couple of kicks, but was rattling and running rough. I took off the timing cover, to find a stripped oil pump spindle, half of the worm broken off and spread liberally inside the timing case, with lots of aluminium swarf. Further stripping showed both cam wheels were missing teeth and both cam spindles were bent. I surmise that the kick-back stripped the spindle and took a chunk off the worm. After starting the engine, the shrapnel was caught in the cam gears, forcing them apart and bending the cam spindles. I would have a look inside your timing case if I were you.

Thanks 'Another Allan' Just stripping the clutch at the moment to centralise the basket on the sprocket. Will look inside the timing case if this doesn't resolve it. Sounds expensive!

Typical indian machine work re the clutch hub, not much you can do or adjust as the hub fits the shaft and the plates fit the hub..

Bad one will play havoc with primary tension and throw everything out of balance at different rpm's..

May need to try another hub..

Stupidly thought I might be able to take it apart and realign the hub on the sprocket. It's riveted on so looks like I'm stuffed. The clutch basket is definitely off centre. It touches the sprocket on one side and has a large 2mm gap on the other. Not sure this would have caused the huge amount of vibes I've been getting though as it was handled carefully, it's probably just the same as before the problem started.
