It's definitely a love/hate thing with the Electra-X, the design was an improvement in some respects, but er... variable build quality sadly meant that enough customers got lemons (instead of the promised peaches) for this model's reputation to take a dive. I think Norm's may have been one of the worst.

This is a shame, as getting a good one will give you lots of fun. They're tunable, and while spares coverage might give cause for concern, I'm sure Mr H will start selling O/S pistons (not just the 535 versions), valves, guides, etc if enough people out there want them. They have the Sixty-5 gearbox in common, though you never hear much about the gearbox needing major work. As for the motor's looks, it's highly subjective, the timing cover with the gear oil pumps could have been neater, but as long as they work I am happy. The head looks fine to me, and I suspect even Norm might have forgiven the looks if the factory had built his properly.

Mine has been (mostly) a delight, if it does go bang I would very much intend to rebuild it with the improved parts available and carry on riding it.

Regards,

Adrian

To me the timing side is the better side for looks so as you say it's subjective. 10000 miles suffering only a broken clutch cable and duff reg/rect unit and it's given me 7 years of enjoyment. Perhaps I've been lucky.

Many thanks, Adrian, and Frank. It is good to know that you have had decent experiences with the model concerned. I'm much encouraged! Hope to contribute my own experiences with the bike at some point in 2014. Wishing all on the forum a good Christmas. Dave.
