The gearbox mounting plates on my model G 1950 appear to have something missing. The gearbox mounts to the bottom holes and the top gearbox mount sits between the slots for adjustment. The plates continue to the rear of the bike and have a hole at the end of each plate. On my bike there isn't anything in the holes. What are the hole s for?

Frosty, have a look in the illustration for your bike in the Parts Books Online section here. Is it like that?

Yes Mark the frame and gearbox mount plates look the same. There is a hole in the plate behind the slot. What is the hole for? Should it have a stud and spacer to stiffen the assembly? Or is it not used on the G but used on the military model which I think had a different frame?

Frosty, I don't know about these bikes but a quick look at the Parts Book for the WD/CO shows that the part number is the same although the WD had a left and right plate but the G only uses one of the two, but twice, if you see what I mean!

hi phil i think you are refering to the gearbox tentioner on parts book online model co 45 to 46 gearbox part 16 it fits in the holes behind gearbox please double check i could be wrong regards harry

Harry you've done it! It's for a trunion that holds an adjuster for the gearbox. Not so much an adjuster, more of a stop to prevent the box being pulled back and over tensioning the primary chain. Now you've pointed this out for the WD models, I've now found it in 1950 G on line parts list. No mention of it in the handbook in the primary chain adjustment section. Hitchcocks have stock. Thanks a lot. I've been a BSA man for years, and still am. I had an Indian Enfield for a short while but it must have been the Friday afternoon model. Loads of quality issues but I liked the general design. I was looking for something older than my 57 BSA and spotted this model G. So far it seems to be in reasonable condition. I'm getting the mag rewound as a precaution although the bike does run well.
