Hi all...

My EFI (2011) is running rich, so much so, that it stalls whenever I try to ride it It back fires and the spark plug was all sooted up.. at high revs it belches black smoke.. Is there anything I can do at home to help or, does it have to go back to the shop?

Hi Nick, I would probably fiddle about testing sensors and such, simply because its a pastime and i don't need the bike for workaday transport..

I don't know your situation or capabilities so i suggest running it over to the shop… Maybe quick fix if they are familiar with the symptoms..

Back on the road before you know it and a bit of knowledge to share with us all.. cheers gwilly..

One thing you can check fairly easily is the bistarter cable (basically the choke) on the left hand handlebar. Is there free play? If not then that could be part of the issue. It might be unseated at the throttle-body end.

Thanks for the replies people..

I did take a brief look at the air filter and in situ it looked clean... I am a total novice .. so would it be advisable to remove the filter and see what is behind it?

Alos, the 'choke' cable. where does it attach and can i work on it without removing the fuel tank and if I do manage to detach it can I adjust things at the engine end?

Given what you've just said are you unfamilar with the "choke" and how it operates? Is there a chance that all this is the "choke" being on all the time? Or did I mis-understand your reply?

Paulk... I dunno, I have never used the choke thingy.. I was guessing anyways just spoke to the guys I bought it from and the opinion is that the spark plug has failed.... and when it fails all the symptoms I described occur...So... a new spark plug!

Nick, Usually with a correctly tuned motor the fuel/air mix needs to be rich to start. So if your motor starts cold (it clealy does) then logic implies this is too rich for running when the motor has warmed up. So again given what you've said about not touching the "choke" I would guess it's on all the time ending up in the situation you are in fouling plugs all the time. Start your bike let it run for a minute or two and move the "choke" to oposite of what it is now and give it a test ride. You make find it's quite a bit quicker than it is now.
Now I'm now expert on EFI's (or anything else for that matter) and all this is said assuming the EFI's have a fuel enricher etc.
