And for the final nail in the coffin to this nonsense.....another link to a useful article:

http://www.sportrider.com/suspension_se ... ewall.html

Pay particular attention to what is stated in the second sentence of the first paragraph in step one with their "definitions" on preload:

Preload: This adjuster bears down on the shock or fork spring and shortens or extends the spring accordingly. Many people think that changing preload affects spring stiffness, and while you can compensate to a certain extent for a too-soft or too-stiff spring by using preload, the right move in that situation is to change the spring itself

I knew I read this somewhere, not this particular article as this is newer then ones I've read awhile back. Good enough for me to back up what I already knew. Damn I hate when I'm wrong..... Thank You Sport Rider writer Andrew Trevitt!!

Ye Gods, what have I started??
MADMIKE, I don't have a tacho fitted. I have just been going on the sound and feel of the bike. Before I changed the sprocket, anything above about 55mph the engine sound and vibration changed and felt too 'busy'. Or I may just have felt over-protective of the old girl! But certainly with the 18T, at 55 mph it feels more comfortable - just my experience through many miles of riding the Bullet.
Thanks everyone for their contributions. Alan R - you always make me laugh :)

Wallace, I entirely agree. The maths is one thing but 3mph can make all the difference when it comes to keeping those 56mph lorries at bay whilst retaining a relaxed motor.

Hello again, I've been away since last Tuesday. Wallace, you started nothing but a lively debate for the entertainment of those who wish to read it and hopefully we can all learn a bit. Cafeman, Agreed ride height can be altered by changing components and other types of adjustment that are on other bikes but that is not the situation talked about in this thread. This thread concerns moving the ramp adjusters at the bottom on the shockers already fitted to the bike in question to change the behaviour of the shocks - this simply will not happen. The senario is that simple just imagine the components in place. Now this doesn't matter what type of spring is fitted be it duo rate, progressive or whatever. You set sag with the preload and you have your ride height nothing more nothing less (without changing components). The same amount of weight will still compress the spring the same amount regardless of preload - unless it's so great the shockers won't move all. Happy summer riding everyone :-)

-------------Hey WALLACE, Ye may have pre-loaded our springs, but ye'll nae take our FREEDOM !!!!!Aye !!( with deepest apologies to all Scotsmen, everywhere)-------------And on the back of this thread, what's the answer to this little conundrum ??--------- I place a steel spring into a toughened glass container and note that it is longer than the container by some 1.5"...I screw the lid on fully, thus giving the spring a PRE-LOADING ( ie it now has latent energy contained within it)... By using a laser beam of the correct frequency --ie passes through glass, I now vapourise the steel spring.....Question}--- what has happened to the energy contained within the pre-loaded spring ??????

All this pre-load is lot of gobledegook on an Enfield. Face it guys, it aint no Panigale. Sorry about that. Anyway the original posting never metioned all this suspenders stuffs, it was simply about changing the gearbox sprocket. Remember that?

Ha ha, no one said this is any use to anybody, and at the end of the day you do what you like to your own bike. But for those of us who wish to discuss the finer points of nothing really important we can split hairs all day. Sprockets eh now what colour is best? Also threads can wander off course there aren't any rules.
