Hi Roeland,
From your earlier post, you live in South Africa and I understand the EFI C5 bares little resemblance to the version delivered in Europe/Rest of the world. How old is the bike? presume less than two years, if so how much warranty time left? In a high ambient /high altitude situation, I think the battery life is somewhat less than we expect and you mention you have neglected it, meaning you let the acid level drop? This is a definite battery killer and even topping up, the damage has been done so the battery will not charge properly. You have made many mods to the engine yourself which does not help to diagnose the problem, but the dealer has stripped the top end after damage occurred to the to the generator stator but your battery discharge situation was present before and after this event. Seems like the right hand side cover has been off a few times, including when you changed to the 19 tooth sprocket so damage to the stator connections may have occurred. You also fitted non standard ECU, replacing what?. Cheers TrevorCH

Trevoch,

In South Africa we only get 1 year warrantee. My bike is now 9 months and I became very frustrated with the services from the relatively new dealerships in South Africa. I would like to note that I´m a qualified mechanic; with very little pratical experience with fuel injection (not my full time profession). I´m located in Cape Town at sea level; so high altidutes no not play much of a part.
At changing the top end the wiring harness was renewed so I doubt this would be the problem at present. I did however forget to mention that I changed the oil to full synthetic - I´m not sure if this could have an influence on the stator output?

Regards

Roeland

For what ever reason, you probably have a faulty/damaged battery. A professional battery shop should be able to make some simple tests to confirm by measuring battery voltage under discharge, 10.7V, open circuit voltage charged 12.6V. If the battery does not pass the shop test get a new battery, make not really important. Then you can determine what part of the charging circuit is at fault. But I still think you should squeeze the dealer to sort this out for you. Cheers TrevorCH

Roland,
I have no knowledge about the UCE's charging system so I presume they are a total DC system. The figures you state seem ok except the running with the headlights on. As Trevor says battery could be a dud. I have a gel type battery here that is 12 months old but we think it might have copped a kicking from an alternator. It tests out ok but as soon as you put load on it it has no power even though it still reads 12.6 volts.Maybe an LED tailight could help, it shouldn't need it but you never know
