Nice! A Southampton registration which I thought probably means sold through Lawton and Wilson (a big Enfield Dealer in Soton at the time) and sure enough there is their name in the logbook. Lawtons entered the Thruxton races regularly and had Bob Macintyre as their rider. Rumour has it the Super Meteor he rode was a works developed Connie inside!

Not rumour, Mark, but fact. Here is a short clip of that machine running. Regards, Paul. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N85c6xJhJ08

Paul, I know it was fact (Ray Knight who also rode the bike and was associated with Lawton's told me about it,) but as the race was for standard machines and the SM should have been in a lower state of tune I was being polite to save the Factory embarrassment. I may be a bit late though!

My old '57 500 Bullet (now living happily in France) was another bike originally sold by Lawton and Wilson, the current owner still has the dealer's badge on the number plate, though the rather odd rear carrier has been removed.

A big head Bullet also came up on ebay a little while ago still bearing its Lawton and Wilson badge. The old Lawton and Wilson premises were just a few miles away from me, based in Millbrook. The business survives these days as a car dealers in Netley Abbey.

Very nice Adrian, I thinks that's only the second late frame 500 non Bighead Bullet I've ever seen.

Hi Chris,

the current owner did some research and found out that they only made 237 500 UK Bullets in 1957, making them only slightly less rare than the later Fury! I don't know how many 500 Woodsman versions were sold in the USA that year.

If anybody is thinking of getting this bike, they are very smooth to ride and this proper De Luxe version is rather rare, just search google images to see how many of these you can find (De Luxe has the fully enclosed chain case) I have found about 6 including one airflow version. You can download documents and stuff from
Kevin's Corner (scroll down the page) and here is a vid showing the magic of RE design. Well worth a watch!
