I'd like some help gauging the value of my bike - it's been a labour of love and a very enjoyable project but reluctantly I have to sell. I've received a very unwelcome letter from Her Majesty's Rapacious Cursewords and I really can't ignore it.
The bike is a slight oddity: it's registered as a 1959 Clipper but at some point between then and the old green continuation logbook it's had an engine change and some other mods. Logic and addresses on logbooks say it was done some time in the 60s but we can't be sure. The engine number and frame number both show up on the REOC files along with the registration number. The REOC said they could most likely date it and recover the registration but I haven't done this as yet.
The bike is 99% completed and is running. It was a basket case taken from a friend's loft and I have been through every part.
The frame and forks are original and have been stove enamelled. The tank, toolbox, seat, side covers and speedo are original. The engine is original with matching crankcase halves. The gearbox, hubs, chaincase, wheels (I think), centre stand, side stand and pegs are original. The tins were painted and are finished nicely, and there are original tank badges. The tank was sealed with POR15.
The engine had a cracked barrel so I fitted a new alloy barrel and piston on original rod and crank. Head was checked and valves re-seated. Rockers are Indian (I think). All other engine internals are original apart from seals, gaskets etc - all new on build with receipts.
The Amal concentric was rebuilt, the distributor is original and the rotor/ stator are too. Clutch is new, chain is new. Wiring loom is new. Lights are original 6v and the battery is a dry cell. Exhaust is new.
The bike starts and runs (video available) but hasn't run for a year or so. Electrics all work. Brakes and clutch work. There is an original rear mudguard which may be saveable and a late front mudguard made to fit.
The gearbox doesn't work properly - I was told it had been rebuilt but I doubt that as it won't select a gear! So truthfully it probably needs to come apart or someone who knows about these things to tell me what the fix is.
The bike needs: rear mudguard fitting. Speedo rebuilding. Battery strap making. New fuel tap seals (they leak). Seat fitting. Gearbox problem sorting. There is also an oil leak from the forks where the wheel axle clamps on.
So... Any thoughts? I can supply pictures and videos and the bike is currently under a sheet in my (dry) garage.
I need to sell but I'm not giving it away, any help gratefully received.
