I'm keenly interested to learn about single-cylinder, four-stroke Royal Enfield bikes built from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s. Can anyone suggest an authoritative book (or other resource)? Thanks!

Have a look at
https://www.royalenfieldbooks.com/ for the best list of titles. You can buy most of them from Hitchcocks but there are others on the publisher website. A good place to start might be "By Miles The Best" which is an illustrated history of Royal Enfields from 1930 to 1970 and will give you the definitive overview of what they were making, a basic specification and when they were produced.

That looks like just the ticket. Thank you!
