In the day most all bikes were oily and most from new. I well remember the drip trays under show room bikes and the regular sweeping the shop floor with sawdust

That's pretty much true. My neighbour has a few old brits, mostly Triumphs in his shed and the floor is self lubricating, however, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Meteor Minors had actually got a reputation as non drippers. Very useful too!
