Hi, I know from bike show in the late 70s early 80s imported bullets had only Enfield on the tank roughly when did they start putting Royal Enfield back on. Is there any way to roughly date early imports (No's etc)
I have been looking at some said 2003 to 2007 and I think they are older any info welcome.

Someone else will tell you exactly, but around mid to late 1990's. They bought the rights to the name and started putting it on the tank. Tornado is 1994, and had ENFIELD on the tank. (not any more though, D.I.Y. transfers!)

I believe that the British Enfield company were given royal appointment in 1892. As the Indian builder did not have Royal appointment they could only use the Enfield part, a member of Indian royalty gave appointment around 2000 for them to use Royal in the name.

My 1999 home market Indian 500 just says 'Enfield' on the tank, with Enfield India embossed on the rubber side pads.

If you search for Royal Enfield Trademark Dispute online you will find the court documents that show the decision to award ownership of the Royal Enfield name to Enfield lndia. REgards, Mark

Mark B says: My 1999 home market Indian 500 just says 'Enfield' on the tank...

My own year 2000 model, 500cc, bought new from a UK dealer, says Royal Enfield on the tank.

That should narrow it down somewhat... but knowing Royal Enfield I expect there are a lot of exceptions...
