So, what do you do when good friends are looking for a folly for the garden and find that the price of precast concrete 'aged' (and not very realistic) arches and old bricks are prohibitive?


Give them part of a church that was being knocked down. Only thing was, I was the only one of us that knew about lime mortar and all that stuff so guess who got to build it. Some of the stones are very heavy, and that is where the idea for the name came from!

Unfortunately, I was missing half of the top of the window. Still, we seem to have got used to it now. I put the two horizontal support bars in and soldered the leaded window to them and a peice of old floor grating made an interesting second window. All done properly of course!

You are right there... Tornado won't use it as the rain comes in.

Excellent work! As it happens I've just been given a 5' x 6" square sandstone lintel, a reject from a fireplace job. So that gives me an idea! Fortunately lime mortar is not a problem as I live in an old stone house and have done many stonework repairs over the years. I feel a new window in the barn coming on!
