Never use them now, they leak oil over my cut-away trousers and boots..

If you have a 500 bullet with one of these fitted, it may very well do the job all by itself, though the edges of the hole might not be very neat.

There is quite a lucrative market in these engines, one of the classic bike mags did a three page article on them, with this collector having dozens of them all brit engines and even a Vincent Lightning one. Sort of sacrilage in one sense, but art in the other, and perfect for those who don't understand the inners and workings of an engine.

They would be even more interesting if they could be driven slowly by an electric motor. You can get geared down very slow speed high torque motors and have it drive the gearbox sprocket in top gear with a short loop of chain. Seeing them turn over and the pistons going up and down and the valves opening would be fun....Anyone remember all those beautiful steam engines etc. slowly running in the Science Museum?

Some of them at shows and the like back in the 60/70s were driven by electric motors, festinating to watch and mesmeric . Apart the great engineering of the engine it self I think very clever to cut it away without the engine internals spewing out. There is two single engine cutaways in an antique shop in Honition mounted in a wooden frame with a crank handle, and I think a clock on top, price I think about £200ish.

Yes they are fascinating to look over. If one did want to motorise these engines the motor could be enclosed in a wooden or steel box type plinth below the engine/gearbox and drive vertically upwards the gearbox sprocket via a chain. In this way the motor would be hidden and not distract from the display....BTW....I wouldn't want to lift it....
