Where'd that factory go? Royal Enfield Edinburgh

Somebody in a blog was asking about it. I could not remember if anyone had said where it was, so with an old picture from RE's A proud War Record, and being a scaleyback, I went in search of the location, which is something I like to think I am rather good at.

Here is the photo from RE's book, showing carlton hill in the background

This is on leith Street looking down Greenside row. Allowing for the current trees, it seems the RE pics was a little closer the hill, so I pin-point it a the end of Greenside Row on the right side, on or just behind the current building.

Let's look from above...

I reckon it is the building or buildings where I put the arrow!

Unfortunately, it seems to have gone in this modern view.

Well, that's where your 'Flea Crates' were made mate!

Your out of date, possibly Microsoft browser does not support the audio element.

Scaley, you may not be aware of Gorge Pullin's Virtual Royal Enfield Museum at http://myroyalenfields.blogspot.co.uk/ If you look on the right hand side you will see a panel called Royal Enfield Factories then and today. It's all in there, including a picture of the Calton Hill site. Happy browsing!

YAY!

Looks like I was pretty dead on then.

Just think, all those guys helping and all those resources to look up. Me? Old picture and google earth, where we finally see the buildings. Note the two long ones have a slight change of angle both in the RE photo and in the 1945 aerial image!

Job done!
