They have a big spiral down the inside and it is very solid and I doubt ramming a bar down the inside would achieve much. No wonder they weigh as much as they do. I had thought about running a long drill down through the middle but even that would be difficult

Hi guys----------yes, have done the same with my LONG one (blush !!). As you say there are 3 "compartments" created by having 2 bulkheads ( sorry--Ex-Navy) and a total of 3 perforated pipes entering and leaving at off-set alignments. I took about 6" out of the rear section--just enough to bring the end of the tail-pipe inside the overall length of the bike. The VM28 breathes through a Tea Caddy & filter with all jetting at ---plus 10%--- just as a start point.( Actually is a tad weak mid-range as it tends to hunt when cruising ) Fuel is around 70 to 80 MPG overall and it sounds better than standard, with a nice "thump" at idling but is not raucous or anti-neighbour on full song. Alas, I don't have a chop saw etc so it was all done with masking tape, hacksaw and brazing. Well worth the effort though. I have some photos but how do you load them on here these days ?? GRUNDA---let's get mechanised on this and we could make a tidy penny ?? Be seeing you
