In the days of classic trials, the Scott trial was recognized as the most demanding and arduous of all. To complete the course was an achievement, to win a class was prodigious, to win a class with a lame machine was super human. Leafing through a back-issue of Classic Dirtbike magazine I came across this gem, in an article reporting on riders’ most ‘memorable Scott Trial’ (with the likes of Sammy Miller, Jeff Smith, the Lampkins, etc.) Johnny Brittain’s contribution is as follows, it speaks for itself: the year was 1953, the bike his works Enfield Bullet; I quote: ‘I burnt the clutch out getting out of a bog. I managed to lock it solid by reversing the plates and taking the distance pieces out, bump started the bike and still managed best on observation’. Is that good or is that good? Well done Mr Brittain – one of the best ever!
