AH! 1965 road safety. One of the better ones, even if they did think that you should ride in the gutter!



Lovely Matchless!

Nice find... He obviously had a much easier going tutor than we did. We would have got a propper bollocking for the wishy washy hand signals. Also, we had to do the slow down and stop handed. IE left for left pull in. Right for right side pull in. We were taught look/Signal/look/manouvre/look, or , mirror/signal/mirror/manouvre/mirror. - Saved my life at least on one occasion.

When a motorist tried to kill myself and my wife by driving straight out of a road junction on our left. (My wife who was riding the outfit I was in the sidecar. Fair play to my wife she briefly stamped on the rear brake which moved the outfit sideways across the road out of the way, and saved both our lives.)

I can assure you I gave the car driver a VERY positive hand signal that is NOT in the Highway Code.

The Matchless looks exactly the same as the one I had as a learner a 250 G2 no mirrors or indicators, of course I used to ride exactly like the good example in the video, I also ended up with permanently black oil stained scared hands and spent most of my time when not working going to the bike spares shop, I also spotted a bright yellow Ford Consul I had one of those as well that never improved my hands either

The guy portrayed as the Bad rider, certainly had some skill to make it look good.



The 'L' plates over the headlamps, weren't learners allowed to ride after dark?


3:00 Looks like the Isetta bubble car to me, great!




No double yellow lines or noticeable parking restrictions








4:30 Lucas 700 headlamp. So glad I have one on Tornado, a Major cosmetic improvement (and it seems to function ok).




4:38 Ford Corsair? My dad used to have one!


Just had to look the bikes up on the DVLA database. It seems the Triumph has no record, but the matchless is still there, it's tax was due 1st September 1984, So I guess it's not on the road at the moment. I shove a pic at the bottom!



Then; of course; I start to wonder where this was shot. Drew a blank with the blue star garage (There were a few of them, and if anybody can find it, it will be Les!), but I did manage to find where they were at 3:18, Junction of Eliot Drive and Scott Crescent, Harrow, London.

Anyway, this shows the last time that Matchless was taxed.

Well, let's see if we can work that out.


'L' plates, headlamps, Lucas, Yes got it.



Lucas were known as the prince of darkness, so placing the 'L' plates over the already dingy headlamps probably made little difference!.
