how come you can get a Continental GT in the states for $5999 dollars, but it cost £4999 pounds here? I expect a little discrepancy but...



my currency thing says that today, £4999 = $8386



and that $5999 = £3576. So it is about £1500 cheaper in the states? or we are paying an extra third on top?

Rule number 1 when buying a car or bike is to offer what you want to pay, not what a dealer might be asking, and go from there. Most dealers on most items will knock off 10% or more rather than lose a sale. If they won't give a discount or load you up with a large amount of free extras then walk, there's always another time and another bike. Last year I had best part of 20% off of a brand new car and last w/end 25% off of a diamond ring for 'er indoors. If you don't ask for, insist upon, or even demand a discount, you won't get one. Treat a dealer like a market trader and haggle because unlike a market trader a dealer will have huge overheads to cover and can't afford to lose a sale. And NEVER tell them how much you have to spend cos that will be the price.

Some of these price differences will be due to import costs and local taxes. For example, here in Denmark, we pay as much as 50% more for cars and motorcycles than the UK. My wife bought a new Citroen C1. In the UK they go for £8,425.00. Over here, the equivalent of £12,500.00. That's with no extras and on offer from the dealership..


If I tried to import a used old Brit bike, I'd end up paying more than double the price of it in import duty and taxes.

Quite right Eddie. It's just that English people don't like to haggle. Why not? You don't need to be friends with the seller - it's a business arrangement so treat it as such. I always ask for a discount and usually get something. Just got 20% on a new car which was about £2500 in my pocket rather than his.

Agree whit @Exile. But things could be worse: here in Argentina, I payed (July 2014) U$S 13500 for a Bullet Classic EFi. Last January goverment put a new tax on cars and bikes. A Bullet Classic now costs U$S 15900. At least, R.E. representation customer service is a real plasure.

A GS800? It's yours if you have U$S 40000. And sometimes you have to wait 18 months to get it at your door!
In the case of cars, a Ford Focus full specs (for our market), fall last month within this internal tax: Prices before/after: U$S29168 / 44136. A Ferrari California? From U$S400k to nearly 900k, but i don't have plans to buy a Ferrari in the next months.

I can make just 2 orders of physical items on internet (in foreign stores), per year, with a differential exchange rate (35% plus), custom tax not included (50%). If I want to put a 3rd order, got to go to Customs Dispatch to get it. So i'm planning carefully my next buy, even some screws and nuts, to Hitchcocks to include everything I need.

This taxes only make a huge drop in car sales, and star to impact on employment. Consecuences of being ruled by a bunch of noobs in economics. This is Argentina, you know...
