went for a blast down the M1 thursday night on my electra x and i was clocked at 87mph over a 5 mile streach by an accurate speedo following on my tail ,remember this is a standard bike with mr h,s tuning kit fitted carb down pipe sprocket etc i think it would have held that speed indefinately but i had to exit the motorway ,the ride at that speed was superb so if probably the worst enfield in the world (electra x)can perform like that i,m sure the 535 conti gt should eat that for dinner bigger bhp etc?the bikes done 2000mile since its crank rebuild and is prooving to be very reliable a good winter hack ,p.s if anyone bidded on e bay for this last month a guy bought it but could not manage to start it so i decided to keep it another year at least ,im nearly in the big league my brand new harley is within my grasp but unfortunately i,ve been busy buying a new bungalow with a very large garage to house my collection of wierd and impractical motorcycles happy days paul.

I could only describe the Electra X (in standard trim) as the worst Enfield made. It's wheezy and asthmatic. I rode my dads Electra X (once the carb and restrictive exhaust had been sorted) and it was a joy to ride. It certainly put my Lightning in the shade!

-----------Dear Mr GRUNDA X11, ---- As your Solicitor I'm duty-bound to remind you that a Definitive Statement is never in a clients best interest.!!----And as the legal MAXm on the M1 motorway is still 70 MPH I can only imagine therefore that you had missed out the word "Allegedly" at the beginning of your statement vis-a-vie "---Was clocked at 87 mph" by mistake and not with intent, or malice aforethought ??..Thank you for you continued custom here at REELY, SKINT & TIGHT-WAD Associates......Herewith enclosed our Invoice, which I hope meets with your customary zeal and approval ??---------- Signed}------ Alan R(sole & Co.), Senior Partner...... PS}----cor, yeah !! I bet it went like a Bullet ??eh, mate ???

I'm with you Paul, my Electra XS with Watsonian Highway Kit and our hosts full Goldy system was a good mway bike. Cruised at 70+ and was massively quicker than a standard AVL Electra.
BUT the new Conti GT has similar power and more torque, less weight and a more efficient drive-train (UCE). I've heard that they are selling out fast - and can 100% understand why!

Grunda, did you use the 'english' crank or the 'factory' one? Just interested as there is a hell of a price difference in the 2 and is the english one really worth it?

Hi Lee the crank is the standard fare with Mr H,s conrod & updated bearing all the parts except for my open silencer which I made by most fitting a long std job were bought from mr h Alan I reverted back to the fifties when the m1 had a 100mph limit lol , the Electra x was probably the most underpowered Enfield ever made but with all mr h,s mods a very strong single 500 in the mists of time I owned 652cc Suzuki savage with a A10 BSA silencer and that was good for 95mph anyway it's food for thought for anybody running 1 of these atb paul

Useful. Judging by some of the posts on here i'm sure i'll need to get this done - i hope i'm not too far away from home when she blows up! I bought this bike convincing the missus i cannot go above 60 therefore i'm safe! There are flaws in my argument (nameley all the dozy drivers on the rd) but she accepted it. The only other problem i'm having is convincing my right wrist that 60mph is actually ok! The bike seems to want to do more but i'm holdng myself back to try and be mechanically sympathetic!! Thanks Grunda.
