Hi Guys----------- anyone going to York Railway Museum this weekend?? Its the 70th anniversary of the world steam speed record being achieved by MALLARD, and all the surviving A4 locos are being assembled at York for a celebration and display......

Hi guys------ Ah yes, BUT---- for those who don't know the FULL story read-on }----- This was a special lightweight train purposely assembled by Sir Nigel Gresley and the LNER with the DOWNHILL route carefully chosen such that they could have a crack at the title.......... Not long before the " 'ell of a mess" had taken the slightly lesser title with a normal service train running from London to Crewe...have a look at this}------- http://www.rail.co.uk/locomotives-and-e ... ion-class/ ------------------ in fact they almost didn't make the stop at Crewe due to insufficient braking !!............ and to add insult to injury as it were, on the return journey MALLARD threw it's centre big eng brasses( an early Enfield trait ??)---- was towed back to London----and (now here's the Best bit---)a GWR design eventually adopted to cure the inherent frailty of the Marine-style set up !!!!--------------WARNING !!, SMUG-MODE now ADOPTED.--------- A L EDDIE, It's only an old A1 inside a toothpaste tube !! --- MARK M, Not really..With Britains first "Pacific" having been designed, built and in service 3 years BEFORE Titanic's launch whilst the other, bigger Railway Companies were still trying to put out a half-decent 4-6-0 I've no worries...

I went to York yesterday (see 'These glorious bikes thread') and forgot about this display at the railway museum! Didn't remember until nearly back home in Hull. What a sod - how long are they on display for Alan??? I agree with Eddie and would have thought a better name could have been found for Mallard and Bittern too for that matter (and Meteor Minor for THAT matter). However Union of South Africa, Dominion of Canada, Dwight D Eisenhower (sp), and Sir Nigel Gresley all sound noble enough, so I guess 4 out of 6 ain't bad.

Hi Alan at the Steam Club meeting last week they were discussing having a 25 year plan for the Club grounds and displays etc. After looking at all the silver heads in the room I sugested a 5 year plan might be better lol
