Reminds me of my Apprentice days when just about everyone used to smoke.

During my apprenticeship in the Drawing Office we had the "Office" pipe - an old clay affair and it was customary to try and beat the record for keeping it going the longest on one "fill".

I had a shot at the record on a single fill of old holbourn rolling tobacco, jeeez it din't half get hot and I managed to keep it going for a little over an hour - mind you I was as sick as a pig afterwards, but I did have the record for a short time.

Happy days........

thats a superb story Andy, the good old days eh before smoking laws ruined the great british boozer (the smoke room )and work place ,although smoking is my only vice as perscrition drugs have halted my addiction to strong lager although i can have a glass or two of real ale occasionally when i,ve been good or thats what the dr tells me !!atb paul. p.s i.m not surprised you were sick with old holborne that was a class smoke in the 80,s couldn,t touch it now though

I took up smoking a pipe while at school. All the smokers would congregate in 'the bogs' and if a teacher or prefect walked in, loads of fags would be chucked down the loos, half smoked. With a pipe, I could put it in my blazer pocket, with my thumb over it until it was 'all clear', then continue enjoying it, unlike the ciggies the others had thrown away. Incidentally, the physics lab wasn't far away and the physics teacher had set up a system of small mirrors to work like a periscope so he could see if anyone was smoking. Alledgedly. Immagine doing that in this day and age.
Cheers, Paul.

I can't believe this nostalgia for such a dangerous stinking habit.
The smoking ban was the best piece of legislation in years.
Grunda, have you thought that you might not need the drugs if you hadn't contaminated yourself with tar
(and all the dozens of other nasties found in tobacco)
I speak as an ex-smoker who saw the light years ago and felt much better for it.
Give up now and you'll find you enjoy not smoking much more that smoking.

I am an ex smoker, as of last November, Pete. Not long, I know, but it's going ok for me. Live and let live, though, I haven't suddenly started telling friends who smoke to keep their filthy habit away from me and ex smokers seem to be the worst for this sort of thing. Smoking is never going to be good for anyone, but it can be very hard to stop and some don't want to stop.
I agree with Grunda about the smoking laws helping kill off the pubs, I nearly bought our local about fifteen years ago, but had a lucky escape, I reckon.
Cheers, Paul.

Quite agree Paul, live and let live (or should that be live and let die) but not so I have to breath it in.
Smokers have no idea of how awful second hand smoke smells (as you are finding out)
Keep up the good work, it's worth it.

hi peter, theres nothing as hypocritical as an ex smoker banging on about the virtues of abstenance from smoking !!my perscription drugs have got nothing to do with smoking!!more to do with motorcycle riding thats probably more dangerous than smoking!!i also have given up smoking many times the last time for three years and i felt worse than i did while smoking 40 a day,so a little pipe smoke won,t hurt ,p.s stopping smoking won,t cure all ills maybe the damage is already done ,and think of this we are only here once so enjoy it while it lasts !atb paul.
