Wow, thanks Alan. That's a LOT of information there! Should keep me busy.
I've still not had much luck with the Montesa. It's impossible to start hot and is getting harder to even start in the first place. I have attached a strobe and have confirmed that there's not a reliable spark happening inside the cylinder... Outside the plug sparks nicely but under compression it's very hit and miss. It's had a new plug, condensor and points, it all looks good so I'm going to fit a new coil tomorrow and hope that does the trick. Cheers bud and happy new year everyone.

Sounds a bit like the Ensign we are working on. Fitted a 6 volt battery, start it on that (first kick) then switch it back to the mag and all is good. It idles fine on the battery but won't rev

It was the coil. I changed it for a new one and she literally starts first kick in any situation... An absolute joy.
