Not in tech as it's a Honda
The single carb conversion on the gold wing

The fella doing the job is a good mate I was just helping over video phone calls

70mm steel box section was used to make a manifold / plenium chamber between the Nissan Sunny carb and the inlets on the wing

He managed to get it all air tight and fitted

Time for first start up!
Fuel on full choke
Press starter button!
Few pops and bangs was all that happened
Over the next few days we managed to get the bike running (well almost) only running on two but running
The next fee days were taken up swapping coils leads turning the carb 180°
I had been assured the bike was running before the conversion?
Right what's going on get the plugs out let's have a look at them, odd thing all four plugs were wet, and good spark on every cylinder?

Try a new set of plugs !
Exactly the same result

I asked are you sure the motor was running on four before we started?
My mate's reply was he had been assured the bike was running well when he bought it but he had never run it !

I told him to put the compression tester on it
He did this with me watching on the phone
First cylinder 130
Second cylinder 120
Third cylinder 40
Fourth cylinder 40

There's a few lessons here

The most important is that video calls are fantastic for trouble shooting

Probably just as important don't listen when the seller says "it runs great but there's a problem with the choke so I can't start it" just walk away

So what's the outcome?
The bike will be broken

It was fun trying Dai

Too late to edit

Just too say we did a wet compression test with a difference in results

The conversation will be kept for another project

Asbo 30 has taken a back seat we're still in lock down for at least another two weeks not allowed further than 5miles from home
Been round the mountain behind the house a few times seems to be OK but can't get to a motorway or anywhere else to try top end

Hopefully lock down will be over soon
Take care all Dai

So you take a sellers word that the engine runs fine, then you cobble together an intake manifold out of box section and fit a completely different carb.
You are then surprised that it doesn't run properly?
The only thing that surprises me that that it runs at all.
Honda usually design things the way they do for very good reasons you know.
Just my opinion.

I didn't buy it neither was it my idea to put a single carb on it I was just asked to help out

Due to the lock down I needed a distraction and the gold wing project was it

Had the motor been good it would have been interesting to get it up and running, still it was a interesting project to be involved with

It was surprisingly easy to work with the video phone calls, that really surprised me

Roll on the next one Dai

Agree with you about video conferencing.
I'd never done it before Covid but it is so useful.
I think even after lockdown we will continue with it.

He should have video called me when he was buying the bike

I overhauled a GL once. It started and ran but on 2 cylinders and yet all four pipes were hot. Bit of head scratching until I realized one cam was 180 degrees out meaning it was running on four but 2 at a time as the wasted spark would allow that to happen.
