You can still buy Acumen chargers.
The oldest one I can find is 2006, but that still has a fuse in the positive lead.
My optimates dont work if you plug them in before connecting to the battery.
I wonder if your connecting up in reverse order had some bearing on its failure?
Either way it should have failed, safe, and not had a melt down.

I didn't connect it up in reverse order, I disconnected it from the mains first, as one is supposed to do, to avoid sparks when disconnecting the leads from the battery.

There was definitely no fuse in the positive lead.

The normally recommended way to connect a charger is to connect it to the battery first, then switch on the mains supply. I simply did that in reverse order.
I thought when you said ,reverse order, that you had switched the charger on before connecting to the battery.
My bad.

The wired in leads supplied with this type of charger actually came ready made and unfused Rachat crédit toiture. Two ring connectors for the battery terminals and and an insulated connector on the other end, to connect up to the charger input lead.

Yes, there's a lesson there somewhere....
I would like to find this kind of wire to change all my household connections.
