All was fine this morning, a bit of throttle to start it, the fast idle lever does work it just takes a few seconds to "kick in."
A bit of gentle throttle keeps it running until the fast idle takes over, then it idles fine. It "clacked" a couple of times but the decompressor didn't open so all seems well :)
Hugely annoying that the fast idle is loaded against a spring though, it would be so much easier if it stayed open so I could get my gloves and helmet on while it warmed up!

Murv - I've got the same bike, 2016 B5 in Marsh Grey, just finished running in at 1600 miles. A couple of words of advice, replace as many fasteners as you can with nylocs (and be warned some of the cycle parts are BSF so you'll need two sets of spanners), check the torque on crucial bolts such as engine, wheel spindles etc as these may not have been done at pdi and change the oil and filter every 1500 miles (only use 15-50W semi-sync ester based such as Silkolene and Motul. Lastly here's a good Facebook group for chit chat, runs etc. https://www.facebook.com/groups/163078194146170/ and Ride safe!

Hi Nigel I also have a april 2016 B5 in marsh grey, got 3000klm on it how does yours go I get 110kph flat knackered on the motorway also have 1994 535 bullet that has been tweaked a bit that will hit 140 quite easily so something is
a bit off, any probs with your bike. I believe these bikes run an automatic primery chain tensioner wnich might be sticking bike has lots of vibes much more than the older models.

HI
like new owner i bought a new enfield dessert storm last year,
after many years of riding big hondas i found the enfield very enjoyable

i can only put this down to insanity on my part,

life at 60mph brill.

have done the lock nut thing and used lots of loctite,
see what falls off next lol.

Hi Scotty, I've seen 75mph/120kph on my speedo but although the B5 would go faster I wouldn't (cataract op due for right eye in next 4 months!). As for vibration, my B5 is comfortable at about 60mph/100kph and then I start to get a bit of a buzz through the bars, but nothing like a Conti GT I had last year which was unrideable! An unbalanced big single is never going to be smooth and one learns to live with it.

Thanks Nigel, I've sent a request to that group.
I had been warned to check all the fastenings, something is rattling a bit but I can't see what! Hopefully will get a bit of time at the weekend for its first good going over.

These bikes aren't about top speed and compared to satnav speed the speedo on my C5 is wildly optimistic anyway. With the standard bazooka exhaust mine would struggle to top an indicated 70mph but since I fitted our host's premium chrome silencer and matching header and fitted their carb conversion I briefly saw an indicated 85mph (60mph actual? Joke.) before I shut off. After that it seems to run more smoothly at my normal riding speed (for this bike) of 55-60mph. Strangelly, apart from the button headed allen screws that held on the heat guard on the original silencer I've not had any fasteners loosen off, although I do check them occasionally. The other usual tip for lessening vibration is to loosen off all the engine mounting bolts, run the engine, revving it a bit, then tighten all the bolts to spec. The idea is to centralise the engine properly in the frame so that it runs more smoothly. These bikes do differ in how much they vibrate, one of the drawbacks of being partly hand built. My guess is that the actual crankshaft balance varies a little from bike to bike, which is why some will never be as smooth as others without an engine rebuild. I doubt it has much to do with the primary chain or tensioner.

hi Murv
re rattle an odd one i tracked down was the little wire guard that was rivited to the heat shield on the silencer.

so i drilled the old rivets out and replaced them with 3/16th flange ss pop rivets,i put a drop of retainer on the flanges.

working fine so far.

watch this space lol.

running in - you should be able to 'feel' the engine, gradually and progressively giving it more work as it loosens up. The book says 30-40mph for the first 300 miles but realistically that's 45-55mph after the initial bit provided you don't go giving it a lot of stick. After first service you can open it up a bit more and give it some more revs to play with. By 1000 miles the tingly vibration should have abated. Keep the bolts tightened, get a torque wrench and Loctite, particularly engine mounts and head stay. Mine also managed to loosen the swinging arm bolt, 70Nm there.

Oil, whilst the bike is newish, the oil may well get used up a lot quicker than the service booklet reckons. If it becomes dirty it is used up. I changed oil several times before it stayed clean. You can't change oil too often. I'm using full synth Mobil 1 Bike 15W-50. Use a good oil, look for JASO MA because it has a wet clutch. Let the dealership deal with the bike until after first service, but do keep an eye for screws loosening before they're lost. First service should tighten everything up so nothing comes loose again but dealerships vary, it should be a very thorough service.
