You must consider the effect of wearing a light coloured helmet according to British Medical Journal.
I did.

http://www.bmj.com/content/328/7444/857

"Helmet colour

The main colours of helmet reported by control drivers were black (39.8%), white (30.6%), and red (13.8%). Compared with wearing a black helmet, use of a white helmet was associated with a 24% lower risk (multivariate odds ratio 0.76, 0.57 to 0.99). We found similar associations for red and a combined group of yellow and orange helmets, although these did not achieve standard levels of statistical significance. Self nominated description of “light coloured” helmet compared with “dark coloured” helmet was associated with a 19% lower risk.

Headlight operation

Of the 175 control drivers randomly surveyed at night, 100% were using their headlight. At twilight, 91 (88%) of the 104 control drivers reported having their headlight turned on. Of the 954 control drivers randomly surveyed during the day, 719 (75%) had their headlight turned on—609 (64%) on low beam setting and 92 (10%) on high beam, with 18 (2%) unsure whether high or low beam was used. Overall, voluntary use of headlight in daytime was associated with a 27% lower risk of crash related injury (multivariate odds ratio 0.73, 0.53 to 1.00)."

Jojje, That BMJ report was ten or eleven years ago, when using a headlamp wassafer, but with the more recent switch to cars with daytime lamps, it may not be wise to rely on information that old.

Hey Paul MH,

I did railway basic track safety or whatever it was called.

I did the sound test and then had 20 questions. Breezed through 19 of them, but could not resist just "Being me" on the 20th.

It went like this... "You are proceeding along a 650 VDC third rail electrified line and you see a pig on the track, What do you do?"

they were expecting something like, "Try to guide the pig off the line and phone the signalbox from the nearest phone."

BORING!!!

My answer, "Using 1000 volt rubber gloves, bridge the pig across the conductor and running rails and crack a couple of eggs on it's back."

I passed 19 out of 20 !

JOJJE, sorry mate, forgot to say I agree with the white helmet being more visible.

That of course is till the case. How long; I wonder; before high viz helmets complete with light stripes, become available?

I always wear a white crash helmet. (What I can't do is wear a full face one as I have yet to find one that I can get on my head due to them hitting my chin. I know a number of people who have stuck to open face helmets because of the problem.)

I was under the impression that the Orange "trackside type" of high viz was more to do with the fact that they don't attract every flying bug within two miles, unlike the green ones. And why is it that any bug that lands on you allways wants to walk upwards towards your head/neck and then into your helmet??

AA, you're not going fast enough if they are crawling around you!

Q) What is the last thing that goes through a bug's mind when it hits your visor?

a) It's ass.

Hi guys------------I think you'll find that, allowing for conditions at the time, the general rule is to ride as near the centre as possible....I generally ride with my right hand just "inside" of the centre markings...This gives you maximum view of the roadside ahead (and them of you)....Also, on country lanes and small width roads with a steep camber, all the greasy muck, pot holes, drains etc. are to be found there...........Here's an extract from the current Highway Code...Some of you may have seen that I now ride a Red Honda 125....pure co-incidence I assure you......................... http://www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk/rules-fo ... to-88.html

----------Oh for an EDIT facility !!---------I meant that the grease and muck will be found in the gutter, NOT in the centre.
