The driver in the top vid gave Tornado a peep-peep on the steam whistle.



There must be some reason that they called that poor engine 'ugly'. I think it is a rather neat Hunslett austerity tank loco and not ugly at all!

Ah but [anorak] it's NOT an austerity/J94 by Hunslet of Leeds, it's the bastard offspring of the Austerity and the old Manning Wardle 16" design with the raised firebox by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn's in Geordieland. They inherited the MW design via Kitson's, another Yorshire locomotive builder. These hybrids were actually known as Uglies back in the day.



The classic austerities were built by a number of builders besides Hunslet, RSH were one of them. Here's one of theirs to the Hunslet design:

Nice and detailed with stuff I didn't know.

I thought there would actually be a story behind the name, but if it were my loco, I would rename it. It's beautiful and deserves better.
