You're absolutely correct. I had the same experience with Smoothrite last year, it didn't cover well and took ages to dry. I have since investigated why this was, and discovered that the formulation has been changed to use solvents which are considered less harmful (Smoothrite and Hammerite brands are now produced by one of the larger paint manufacturers).
I have discovered, however, that 'Toolstation' Smooth Metal Paint and Hammer Finish Paint (made by 'Flag') are still Xylene based and behave similarly to Smoothrite/Hammerite. I used some on parts of my sidecar chassis last year and was very pleased with the results.
The only question is, for how long will we still be able to buy it?

Following Alan R's post, I looked up the 'Flag' website he provided - and there were the dreaded words 'Available until stocks are exhausted'. So production of another excellent product has been stopped. On the Toolstation website, however, all colours are listed as still being in stock - I'm going to my local branch this evening anyway, so I think I'll be putting a couple of tins into stock!
Having done a further search I have found another product called 'Hammercote' (made by Coo-Var) which is available in smooth and hammer finish, and is Xylene based. I've not tried it, of course, but it sounds to be just like the original formuls Hammerite/Smoothrite! It seems to be readily available on-line.

Paul,
I'm sick of summer, we had 18 days straight over 30C then about 4 cooler days and I just heard we now have another 8 above 30c and remember above 30 can be in the 40's, park your bike in the sun and the tyres can stick to the asphalt and we are way down in the south of Aus
