I am about the same age as you Geoff and used to live within walking distance of Gamages, when I was talking with Scalyback about the Meccano models while having breakfast in the café I told of my trips to view all this stuff on display like you a shortage of cash was the problem

Super train set :) I've just sold off most of my extensive N gauge cos I can't see the little buggers anymore :( The former train driver instructor in me still says the grey wagons (unbraked) would always be at the rear near the brake van. Brown wagons(braked and blow-through)to the front. A grey wagon and anything behind it would be a "swinger" and reliant on the guards brake van for braking.
