In defence of the Electra X, I use mine, a 2007 model which i've had from new, as well as day rides, on trips of 800 miles plus, it's been around Cumbria, North and South Wales, North Humberland and Dumfries and Galloway, with 240 mile days at times, using motorways when unavoidable, they're not to bad if you stay a fair distance behind the Trucks, which are governed to 56 mph, and if one comes up close behind you then just overtake the one in front. It's also been on camping trips fully loaded with no issues. The knee angle is about as good as you can get without going down the feet forward route and it's comfortable on such long rides.
I removed the kickstart lever, just in case i'm tempted to use it,not recommended with two knee replacements,it works great on the electric starter,I just roll back the decompressor lever as I press the stop button to prevent any kick backs. Other than that I service it regularly and change the oil and filter every 2000 miles, the magnetic plug and the filter plugs are always spotless.
I sold a BMW R1100R mianly due to knee issues, but when I took the bikes on rides back to back, I always came back after riding the Enfield with a bigger smile on my face, the weight, fuel consumption and comfort are all great.
You will always get more posts from folk having problems with their bikes, than those who are happy with theirs, it's just how it is,don't let it put you off going on long trips. Cheers, Ian.

Sorry, my last post reads like I've done 800 mile days I meant it to read 800+ miles on trips of several days, with up to around 240 a mile day. Cheers, Ian.

Hi Mr h... where did you go? I went om a big tour on my EFI about 3 years ago now. Was away for 2 weeks (wish it was longer) and did most of the near 3000 miles two up, fully laden with camping gear and a maintenance tool kit. The bike weighed a lot! But, it handled the trip really well. Two things occured which were both my fault - the chain was adjusted unladen, then I packed it so it ended up a little tight and stripped 3 - 4 teeth off the rear sprocket, and the rear brake cam finally seized - it had been threatening to do this for ages but I ignored it... Both were easy fixes and both were essentially roadside fixes. However, the main point is that the bike engine handled the weight and the trip, we had a great time, were treated very, very well by everyone we met and the hot bath I had in Luxembourg was the best and most needed bath in history :)

Rode my 2012 EFI to the UK last year covering 1200 kms with no trouble at all. Cruised beautifully with panniers and top box and coped with torrential rain and force eight gales on my return to France. Enjoyed it so much I'm doing it again in June to tour the south coast!

MickB... the rain - why did you remind me of the rain! We got caught in the worst weather I have ever faced on a bike on our big trip. Luckily the first bit of bad weather was when we were having a two day stay in a campsite (for a break) and we were able to get everything dry. The second bit of bad weather was when we satyed in a hotel in Luxembourg so the raidators dryed things off... but the worst was the trip home from Dover to Glasgow - as we say in Scotland, the rain was stoating (i.e. it pierces your skin if it hits unprotected body parts, resulting in near death bleeding)! Visibility was about 10 metres so I had to ride whilst pulsing the rear brake light switch to get additional visibility from behind :(
