Hello all.......To-day, I've not renewed the insurance on my GL1000 Gold Wing but the Tax is valid until 04 2015........MUST I BY LAW now declare SORN and return the Tax Disc for a rebate ??...........OR, can I keep the Tax on it ( I might want to sell the bike soon anyway) and just declare SORN ???....I realise I can't ride it as there is no valid insurance.........

Yup 'fraid so. A vehicle must be insured if it is taxed even if it's an historic that doesn't have to pay for a tax disc and its in your garage completly dismantled. Previously you had to be caught driving without insurance to be prosecuted but now they can just check their data base and fine you regardless of circumstances. So SORN it is and back with the disc, you can't have both sadly. ATB John

Come October there will be no disk to worry about of course.
More worryingly, remaining tax will have to be reclaimed on transfer - can't stay with the vehicle for the new owner.
You will only be able to reclaim whole months but the new owner will have to tax from the first of the current month so they get a free months tax at every transfer.
Why am I not surprised?

Still have no idea how the DVLA got powers to fine people over insurance which technically is nothing to do with them.

YES, Got it!

Right, I hereby give notice that I will fine everybody £10 if they fail to go to boots the chemist and buy a hot water bottle by 12:00 tomorrow morning!

They can do it, so......

Easy Scaly, the f*****g stupid politicians gave them the power.
I wouldn't want to guess how much road users pay in tax. I don't want to know - it would only make me depressed.

The DVAL don't regulate insurance, they don't sell it, they don't provide comeback if insurance fails to pay out, so how the hell can a driver and vehicle licensing agency, fine for something they have no control or power over, it's absurd!

I'm all for people having insurance, and it's the police that should enforce it, not some jumped up agency.

well, it won't surprise me if the DVLA start putting advertising on their form now to trouser even more money.

I can image that some of the larger companies would jump at the chance.

Hmm,,, let's see...
