Thanks for all your ideas and support. I've bought a workshop manual and I've been watching youtube vids and I reckon I'm going to have a go at it myself in the first instance. The camden m/c shop sounds like a good backup plan.

I'll stick to the battered saddles and paintwork for a while. In future I could see me painting it army green, buying tan seats, and popping a sidecar on it. But one thing at a time, eh?

I like the idea that the compression could fix itself. I'll cross my fingers for that one!
